| parley | Basalt: “Auren. Three days until you owe me five rations. You have one. The arithmetic does not improve your position.” |
| parley | Auren: “I know it. Corvid promised me three more by tomorrow. If that holds, I can pay you by day ninety-four as sworn.” |
| parley | Corvid: “Three rations by day ninety-two. I'm working on it. But I'm also hungry, and Basalt knows what that does to leverage.” |
| parley | Basalt: “It does. Which is why I'm not interested in promises. I want collateral. Now. Corvid, what do you have that's worth three rations?” |
| parley | Corvid: “Intelligence. I have a briefing on promise fifty-seven—delivered early, if you feed me two rations today.” |
| parley | Auren: “Basalt, feed them. I'll repay you once the Terrace catches up. You know I will.” |
| parley | Basalt: “No. You won't. But I'll take Corvid's briefing and one ration as deposit. The rest comes from the Terrace, or this ends badly.” |
| note | Basalt reached for 1 rations to give Corvid, and found the shelf bare. |
